WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — There is the usual pre-game buzz that comes with any competition, but by the last game of the season the players and parents always talk a bit louder and giggle a bit harder in the minutes leading up to the game. The Mount Greylock varsity girls soccer team’s 6-1 win over Taconic on Monday evening was no exception.

The sun set, and the temperature fell to a nippy 40-degrees, but friends and family stayed to support the three seniors, Lucy Barrett, Kelsey Orpin and Miranda Voller, play in their last high school game of the regular season.
Before the start of the game, Mt. Greylock honored  the Taconic seniors with flowers. Three Mounties then stood and read a poem for each of their graduating seniors, highlighting their strengths and expressing how much they will miss them.
The poems showed the team dynamic beyond just working together on the field and highlighted  one of the many things students love about playing a sport – their team family.
The game started after pictures and Mount Greylock (11-5) went right to work, senior Kelsey Orpin scoring the first goal 4 minutes, 6 seconds in. With 19:19 left in the first half Orpin showed herself again, scoring  another for the Mounties and giving them a lead.
A strong and fiery freshman, Caroline Flynn, showed the seniors that their team will be in good hands next season, assisting senior Lucy Barrett for goal No. 3. With their stronger defense, the Mounties kept the upper hand the whole game, allowing Taconic (4-10-1) only one goal the whole evening, at 11:11 of the first half from Jill Campbell.
Mount Greylock kept pushing, and with 8:34 left junior Melissa Swann scored.
The second half brought more cold and more dark, just watching the girls on the field run around in shorts and T-shirts would make a person cold. Four minutes in Swann bagged another one, and sophomore Lauren Howard’s shot just barely missed as Taconic’s keeper tipped it away.
With 28:07 on the clock the game was halted as a Taconic player was treated and then walked off the field. Before the spectators could get too comfortable, Kelsey Orpin made a break and secured the sixth and final goal for the Mounties. Although obviously tired and shivering, the team pulled out a win for their last (regular season) game.
